On September 20, 1873, bonds and banks failed as a depression loomed. Wall Street went into a free fall in the wake of US railroad bonds defaulting and the biggest banks in the US failing. The crisis closed the New York Stock Exchange for 10 days. A major worldwide economic collapse followed and did not let up in some countries for two decades.
