Today's Fact

On August 17, 1969, America's Gulf Coast was slammed by a monstrous Category 5 hurricane, whose vortex of clouds filled almost the entire Gulf of Mexico. It packed 175-mph winds and pushed a storm surge 24 feet high as it raged into the US at the mouth of the Mississippi River. In the end, Camille killed 259 people and caused $1.42 billion in damage. (It came up into Virginia and flooded our area, too. It is the first flood I remember. - CD)

Today's Fact

On August 10, 1937, George Beauchamp decided to turn up the volume on guitar music. At the time, Americans were loving exotic Hawaiian music, but acoustic guitars just couldn't be played loud enough for large crowds. Beauchamp received a patent on this day for his "frying pan," a cast-aluminum guitar with amplifying electric pickups, which he had initially created in 1931.

Today's Fact

On August 3, 1977 Radio Shack unveiled the TRS-80 computer, known as its Tandy line. It was one of the first mass-market home computers and it sold in Radio Shack stores. It featured 4K of RAM and sold for $399 (or $599 with a monitor and tape recorder for storage). Upgrades kept various TRS-80 models on the market until 1991.

On July 27, 1940, hunter Elmer J. Fudd met "that pesky wabbit" for the first time in 'A Wild Hare,' an animated short subject from Warner Bros. "What's up, Doc?" became Bugs Bunny's famous line, and the shorts were popular in movie theaters for decades. The TV compilation show ran for 40 years.

Today's Fact

On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong took a giant leap for mankind as he became the first human to walk on the moon. NASA's Apollo 11 Lunar Module landed 238,855 miles from Earth on the moon's Sea of Tranquility, and six hours later Armstrong exited the vehicle, descended a short ladder, and became the first human to walk on the moon. Minutes later, astronaut Buzz Aldrin joined Armstrong on the surface. Millions back home tuned in to the historic event. (I remember watching this. Yes, I am old. - CD)

On July 13, 1985, an estimated 1.9 billion viewers in 150 countries tuned in to Live Aid, a TV charity event of enormous scope that featured an array of rock and roll legends playing simultaneously in front of 100,000 in Philadelphia and 72,000 in London to raise money for African famine relief. Here's a video to Queen playing Bohemian Rhapsody and other things at Live Aid, if you want to see it.

On July 6, 1974 Garrison Keillor regaled a dozen folks in the audience at St. Paul's Macalester College when he first broadcast 'A Prairie Home Companion,' live on Minnesota Public Radio. His variety show built a cult, and then a popular mainstream following, for the "news from Lake Wobegon."
