On January 10, 1863, the world's first subway opened. The Metropolitan Railway opened in England with steam engines pulling wooden carriages lit by gas lamps. Later officially called the London Underground, its warren of tunnels was more popularly referred to as, simply, "The Tube."

Today's Fact

On December 27, 1831, Charles Darwin departed England aboard the HMS Beagle. The departure had been delayed by weather, but when the voyage was underway with a 22-year-old Charles Darwin on board, it was the beginning of what would be a five-year journey to explore the far reaches of the southern Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Darwin's extensive notes during the expedition later were published as a popular travelogue.

Today's Fact

On December 20, 1860, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union. In a unanimous vote, the South Carolina legislature enacted an ordinance of secession after Abraham Lincoln was elected president, declaring that in Lincoln they detected a perceived "hostility . . . to the institution of slavery." Within months, other slave-holding states seceded, forming the Confederacy and precipitating the Civil War.

Today's Fact

On December 13, 1937, as the Sino-Japanese War progressed, Japan overtooks the capital of China. General Matsui Iwane ordered the city destroyed. His troops butchered about 150,000 Chinese men and raped 20,000 women and girls, most of whom were killed afterward. Iwane was later hanged for war crimes. (Not the cheeriest of facts but maybe a necessary reminder of humanity.)

Today's Fact

On December 6, 1865, slavery was abolished in the United States. This occurred eight months after the end of the Civil War when the 13th amendment was ratified by the required number of states. The amendment's passage was secured after intense lobbying by President Abraham Lincoln, whose Emancipation Proclamation had declared slaves free, but their status after the war was still uncertain.

Today's Fact

On November 29, 1961, Enos the chimp was launched into space. The monkey orbited Earth after having completed 1,250 hours of training. The monkey left Cape Canaveral aboard the Mercury-Atlas 5, becoming the first chimp to successfully orbit the Earth. Enos took two spins around the globe before splashing down near Bermuda. On the rescue boat, Enos jumped for joy and shook hands with his rescuers.
