On August 9, 1854, Henry David Thoreau's meditation on man and nature was published. Thoreau spent two years living on the shores of Massachusetts' Walden Pond to create his literary masterpiece. The memoir of his secluded time sold well and remains a seminal work of early environmentalism and a celebration of the individual's spirit.
