Today's Fact

On November 16, 1959, the Broadway stage came alive with the 'Sound of Music.' In the now-beloved story, a governess, the children she teaches, and their father whom she’s come to love are forced to flee the Nazi occupation of Austria. The musical, by Rogers and Hammerstein, was based on the story of the Von Trapp family. Many of the show’s songs became standards, particularly after the release of a popular 1965 film adaptation.

On November 9, 1989, East German officials bowed to pressure and lifted travel restrictions to the West. Thousands of Berliners from both sides swarmed the wall and cheered the destruction of the 12-foot high barrier that had separated them for over 30 years.

On November 2, 1948, President Harry Truman won an upset victory over Republican challenger Thomas Dewey, the governor of New York in the race for the US presidency. Truman's win was (at the time) considered to be the greatest upset in the history of US presidential elections.

On October 26, 1947, Hillary Diane Rodham, later known as Hillary Rodham Clinton, was born. Clinton is an American politician who was the First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001, U.S. Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009, 67th United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, and the Democratic Party's nominee for President of the United States in the 2016 election. She won the popular vote but failed to win the Electoral College.

Today's Fact

On October 19, 1386 (!), students began to learn new things at Germany's Heidelberg University. The facility held its first lecture on this date and continues to do so, surviving the Black Death that will ravage the continent, France's destruction of the city, the chaos of the Protestant Reformation, and the cataclysm of two world wars.  It is one of the world's oldest surviving universities and has been coeducational since 1899.

On October 21, 1979, Douglas Adam's book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which reveals the answer to all of life's questions, was released. The book, which spawned from Adam's radio show, evolved into four other books, a computer game, a movie, a TV series, and comic books. The book is now a must-read for nerds.

On October 5, 1969, BBC-TV premiered something completely different - the Monty Python's Flying Circus. The show featured five Brits and one American who wrote and starred in the sketch comedy. Their particular brand of silly, surreal mayhem changed the comedy landscape over 45 episodes that at first garnered a cult following before achieving worldwide fame.
