Today's Fact

On November 15, 1777, the Second Continental Congress approved the Articles of Confederation, which unified the 13 American colonies under a weak central government and named the new country the United States of America. The document, a precursor to the Constitution, was ratified by the states on March 1, 1781.

On November 8, 1971, Led Zeppelin released its officially unnamed fourth album. This collection0 from the British rock band became known as Led Zeppelin IV. The album was a phenomenal success and contained some of Zeppelin's greatest hits: 'Black Dog,' 'Rock and Roll,' and, of course, 'Stairway to Heaven.'

On November 1, 1512, Michelangelo's masterpiece opened to the public. Four years in the making, Michelangelo's artwork covered over 5,000 square feet of the papal chapel's arched ceiling and is still visible today. The depictions of hundreds of human figures in various poses was hugely influential for centuries.

On October 18, 1851, a London publisher released a 927-page epic sea yarn, 'The Whale,' by American author Herman Melville. The US edition was published a month later, almost 300 pages shorter, and re-titled 'Moby-Dick.' While it was later hailed as one of the greatest novels ever written, initial sales were poor.

On October 11, 1991, a Supreme Court confirmation hearing riveted the US. The US Senate Judiciary Committee called a former assistant to Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas to testify regarding her time working for him. What Anita Hill told the panel caused a firestorm of controversy and opened up a national debate around workplace sexual harassment. Obviously said debate is still ongoing, has not been resolved, and women are still not considered human in the eyes of many men.

On October 4, 1957, a 184-lb metal sphere streaked through Earth's low orbit at 18,000-mph, sending shockwaves through the geopolitical landscape, as the USSR's launch of its 'Sputnik' satellite made the Soviet Union the first nation to send a manmade object into orbit. The launch beat the US by three months.
