On September 13, 335, Constantine the Great consecrated a new church built over the purported sites of Jesus Christ's crucifixion, burial, and resurrection in Jerusalem. Christendom's holiest place, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was destroyed and rebuilt more than once.

On September 6, 1522, the Nao Victoria sailed into Seville, Spain, after a historic journey. The boat took three years to sail 42,000 miles to be the first circumnavigation of the world. Of the original five ships and more than 200 sailors that started Magellan's expedition, only the Nao Victoria and 18 men returned from the globe-spanning voyage.

On August 16, 1898, Edwin Prescott was awarded a patent for an improved roller coaster design using a teardrop-shaped loop. The Loop the Loop opened in Coney Island in 1901, but the trend of looping roller coasters did not catch on until decades later.

On August 9, 1854, Henry David Thoreau's meditation on man and nature was published. Thoreau spent two years living on the shores of Massachusetts' Walden Pond to create his literary masterpiece. The memoir of his secluded time sold well and remains a seminal work of early environmentalism and a celebration of the individual's spirit.

His wife, Jeanne de Clisson, took her revenge on the French king by raising her 'Black Fleet' and becoming an impressively successful pirate plying the English Channel, hunting down French ships.
