On February 23, 1455, The Gutenberg Bible was produced using Johannes Gutenberg's invention, the moveable type printing press. Forty-eight copies of the original pressing have survived to the 21st century. They are immensely valuable collectibles.

On February 16, 1966, The Beach Boys began recording Good Vibrations, which is considered the group's  greatest and most blissfully complex song, thanks mainly to the work of their frontman, Brian Wilson.

On February 9, 1950, the Red Scare began as Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy offered a speech to Congress warning of "enemies from within." He brandished a list of 205 "known communists" that he obtained from the State Department. The speech and subsequent investigations propelled McCarthy to infamy and ruined the lives and careers of many.

On February 2, 1922, James Joyce published Ulysses, a modernist novel released by Paris publish Sylvia Beach. The book was published on Joyce's 40th birthday. The novel revolutionized fiction writing and also lead to an obscenity trial.

On January 19, 1883, Roselle, New Jersey became the first town to use overhead electrical lines to light up the darkness. The lines, put in place by Thomas Edison, soon became standard as the United States and the world moved from candles and gas lights (though not gaslighting) to electricity.

On January 12, 1992, the fictional HAL lab debuted. The supercomputer in Arthur C Clarke's novel, 2001: A Space Odyssey, was created to control the Discovery One spacecraft. The speaking computer was well mannered, but unreliable.
