On February 22, 1997, scientists in Scotland revealed the existence of Dolly the sheep, the first animal successfully cloned from an adult somatic cell. The sheep, which was created from a mammary cell, was named after Dolly Parton.

On February 15, 1946, ENIAC was unveiled as the first general-purpose computer. The University of Pennsylvania formally dedicated their room-filling computer on this day. The press has dubbed it a 'Giant Brain.' The six main programmers, all women, had initially programmed ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer) to run computations on the feasibility of the hydrogen bomb.

Today's Fact

On February 8, 1587, Mary, Queen of Scots, at the age of 44, was executed via beheading at the order of England's Queen Elizabeth I. Mary Stuart, who became queen at the age of 6 and spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents. She ultimately became Queen of Scotland and after two marriages she lost rule when her one-year-old son by her second husband was declared king. She sought refuge from the Queen of England, who was her cousin. England's queen kept Mary Stuart in various castles and manors for 18 years before finally saying, "Off with her head" after hearing that Mary Stuart had been convicted of a plot to assassinate England's monarch.

On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon reentering Earth's atmosphere, killing all seven crew members. The disaster was the second fatal accident in the Space Shuttle program after Space Shuttle Challenger, which broke apart and killed the seven-member crew 73 seconds after liftoff in 1986.

On January 25, 1947, Thomas Goldsmith, Jr. filed a patent for a Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device, an interactive missile simulator game to be played on a screen. Prototypes were made and the patent awarded the following year, but no commercial models were ever released. This is the first known video game.

On January 18, 1788, the European colonization of Australia began as a convict-laden fleet of ships, known as the First Fleet, arrived in Botany Bay, Australia. The ships said for 250 days from England before finding land 15,000 miles away from home. Around 1,300 people, including 736 deported criminals, began new lives on the continent.

On January 11, 1569, England held its first ever lottery. Chartered by Queen Elizabeth I, the first lottery was drawn in England for benefit of "publique good workes." Later, ticketing rights were sold to brokers, the precursor to what would one day be called stockbrokers.
