Life would never be the same after a big concert in New York on August 15, 1969. Three days of peace and music began in Bethel, New York at Max Yasgur's farm. The place filled with masses of music lovers as the Woodstock Music and Art Fair kicked off its first day. Before the event was through, 400,000 reveled in rainstorms and mud, some of history's best rock bands jammed, and a counterculture considered itself transformed.

On August 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon resigned from office. Reeling from the Watergate scandal, and facing the looming prospect of impeachment, President Richard Nixon broadcasted his decision to leave the White House. This was a first in US presidential history. Nixon's resignation became official the next day, ending an infamous chapter in political corruption.

On August 1, 1981, a new form of entertainment debuted as MTV network flew onto TV screens. MTV cashed in on a new form of popular entertainment, complete with "video jockeys" (VJs) to introduce music videos, a way of both listening to and watching popular songs. The first video shown, 'Video Killed the Radio Star,' proved partially prophetic.

On July 25, 1898, the beginning of the end of the Spanish-American War started when the United States launched a land offensive in the Puerto Rican Campaign. 1,300 US infantry soldiers landed at Puerto Rico's Guánica Harbor, where they found no resistance. American forces secured the island in a month's time, and Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the US to end the Spanish-American War.

On July 11, 1804, political rivals US Vice President Aaron Burr and former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton arrived at New Jersey's Palisades and proceded with a pistol duel after years of public rivalry. Hamilton fired into the air, but Burr shot directly at Hamilton, felling him with a fatal bullet.

On July 4, 1054, Chinese astronomers spotted a "guest star" in the sky, so brilliant it could be seen in the daytime. It remained visible for some two years, and was observed in Asian, Arab, and possibly American lands. It was identified as the SN 1054 supernova that births the Crab Nebula pulsar. (And you thought I'd list the signing of the Declaration Independence, didn't you!)
