On March 9, 1862, two steam-powered, iron-clad warships, the USS Monitor, manned by Union forces from the United States, and the CSS Virginia, manned by forces from the Confederate States of America, fired on each other for four hours in the waters near Hampton Roads, Virginia. The world's first engagement of iron-fortified battleships ended in a draw.
