On February 25, 1870, Hiram Revels was the first African American to be named to the U.S. Senate. The senator was sworn in after two days of heated debate on the Senate floor as spectators packed the galleries to see this ground breaking event. Revels, a former Union Army chaplain, represented Mississippi.
