On November 7, 1492, a fireball 'omen' fell from the sky. A boy just outside the walled village of Ensisheim, in what would one day be Alsace, France, witnessed a huge fireball fall from the sky and plunge a meter deep into a field. Locals, who viewed the meteorite as a good omen, chiseled pieces of the stone for themselves until a local official ordered them to stop.
