Today's Fact

On September 19, 1893, New Zealand gave women the right to vote, becoming the first sovereign nation to do so. The change came after some 20 years of activism and a 32,000-signature petition. Governor Lord Glasgow gave Royal Assent to a bill granting adult women the right to vote. US women gained voting rights 27 years later.
