On May 31, 1819, Walt Whitman was born in Huntington, NY. He achieved fame for his journalism, essays, and most notably, poetry. His collection 'Leaves of Grass' remains in publication and has been called a controversial and groundbreaking work for its unconventional writing style and progressive themes.
