On October 20, 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee in Washington, D.C., held its first hearings into possible Communist infiltration of the US film industry. Soon after, a career-killing blacklist was drawn up with the help of famous informants, and Hollywood was caught in the 'Red Scare.'
