On December 31, 1857, Britain's Queen Victoria made Ottawa the capital of Canada. She followed the advice of her advisors and selected a lumber town, called Bytown, to be Canada's capital. She choose the outpost that would become Ottawa because its backcountry location made it easier to defend against an American invasion and because it stood midway between Toronto and Quebec.
