Today's Fact

On October 19, 1386 (!), students began to learn new things at Germany's Heidelberg University. The facility held its first lecture on this date and continues to do so, surviving the Black Death that will ravage the continent, France's destruction of the city, the chaos of the Protestant Reformation, and the cataclysm of two world wars.  It is one of the world's oldest surviving universities and has been coeducational since 1899.

Today's Fact

On October 21, 1979, Douglas Adam's book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which reveals the answer to all of life's questions, was released. The book, which spawned from Adam's radio show, evolved into four other books, a computer game, a movie, a TV series, and comic books. The book is now a must-read for nerds.

Today's Fact

On October 5, 1969, BBC-TV premiered something completely different - the Monty Python's Flying Circus. The show featured five Brits and one American who wrote and starred in the sketch comedy. Their particular brand of silly, surreal mayhem changed the comedy landscape over 45 episodes that at first garnered a cult following before achieving worldwide fame.

On September 28, 1928, Scottish biologist Alexander Fleming found that a staphylococci culture had been sullied by a mold that destroyed the bacteria. With this accidental discovery, Fleming found penicillin, an antibiotic that changed the world and saved countless lives.

On September 21, 1937, J.R.R. Tolkien's new novel, The Hobbit was published in London. It sold out quickly, and the Oxford professor's tale was proven hit with readers and critics alike. Publishers requested a sequel, and more than a decade later, he delivered The Lord of the Rings.

On September 14, 1959, the Soviet Union's space probe 'Luna 2' crash-landed on the moon's surface near Mare Imbrium in the Palus Putredinis region, two days after its initial launch. The spherical spacecraft became the first man-made object to reach another celestial body, and the first of many future moon visitors.

On September 7, 1776, American patriots released a new weapon into New York Harbor to rendezvous with the HMS Eagle. A 6-foot by 3-foot single-person submersible craft, the 'Turtle' made its way to the British ship, where the pilot unsuccessfully attempted to plant a bomb on the hull in history's first submarine attack.
